Last week we had the first movie of 2025, this week we have the first good movie of 2025. Also, just FYI, I think this movie is best viewed with zero context going in, no trailers no nothing, so if you plan on seeing this one I’d come back and read this after.

Companion (2025):
Got an early screening of this one like an elitist.
For the setup, Companion follows a young couple, Josh (Jack Quaid) and Iris (Sophie Thatcher, who you might recognize from Heretic last year) as they visit their friends at a remote yet badass lakehouse. The thing is, Iris is an AI robot girlfriend who is programmed to be in love with Josh. Everything is fine and dandy until Iris’ programming to be the perfect peaceful girlfriend starts going wrong.
I really enjoyed this one. Way funnier than I expected, some real quality organic humor and recurring bits that landed pretty well. Thought there was a chance throwing some humor into a movie like this might make it a little messy but it worked super well. Little bit of slasher, little bit of Terminator, we’re just talking about a nice well rounded flick! Love that they got my boy Guillermo from What We Do in the Shadows in there too. Wearing a real nice shirt from Dan Flashes in this at one point. A lot of patterns. Very expensive.
Interesting story structure that I thought I wouldn’t like but ended up enjoying. There are plenty of twists that aren’t too obvious and kept me engaged. After seeing some meh movies I wasn’t really having that much fun with for the past few weeks, this was a nice change of pace.
I will say, they put Iris being a robot in all of the marketing (you can even tell in the poster) and while it makes sense to drive more viewers to the movie, I do wish I didn’t know that information going in. But it didn’t hamper my viewing of the movie at all so I don’t think it will for you either.
TL;DR: Companion is just a great fun movie. Original story that delivers exactly what I was expecting. A little genre bending, with the romance/comedy/gore/thriller combo, great performances from the stars and a movie you won’t regret seeing.
Ranking: 4 stars (82 raw score)
Compantrivion:
The trivia for this movie was absolute garbage. Iris is an anagram for Siri. There ya go!
Coming Soon:
Planning on knocking out a movie that is the talk of the town these days, and not for good reason.

Companion (2025):
Main reveal is that Iris’ boyfriend basically jailbroke her to kill this Russian dude named Sergei to steal a bunch of his money, she’s not a murder bot or anything, her aggression settings were set super high and they set her up
She steals Josh’s phone with all of her settings and turns her intelligence all the way up, there are tons of little settings on there that she plays around with to her advantage that are super fun
Guillermo’s boyfriend is revealed to be a robot as well, and there’s a point where Guillermo dies and Josh jailbreaks him too to turn him into the terminator
The break up line was probably one of my favorite moments
Iris kills Josh finally at the end with a mechanical wine opener in one of the more gnarly deaths I’ve seen in a while
Loved the fake meet-cute stories and the Halloween party dance bit
